Armed Robbers Steal Money From Credit Union

The Holy Family Credit Union at Ashtown in Kumasi was invaded by armed thieves who made away with GH64,800.

At about 5.15am on Sunday, the fleeing robbers allegedly used sharp objects to cut the padlocks on the main entrance of the credit union.

They then removed the safe, which contained the huge sum of consumer contributions to the credit union.

Although no arrests have been made, police have asked the 72-year-old security guard and the credit union's management to cooperate with their investigations.

"On Sunday 23 February at 6:30 am, Reverend Father Stephen Adu Poku, Assistant Parish Priest of the Holy Family Catholic Church Mission in Ashtown, visited the Manhyia Police Station with Simon Duffour, Branch Manager of the Holy Family Credit Union in Ashtown.”

"The former claimed that they discovered that on the same day, February 23, at about 05:15 hrs, burglars had entered the Credit Union office and made away with the money vault attached to the office wall as well as its contents. The safe contained 64,800 Ghana cedis in cash.” According to a police report, no arrests have been made.

The police reportedly arrived at the scene of the robbery after receiving a formal complaint from the credit union's administrators.

The suspected burglars allegedly "used sharp weapons to cut the padlocks on the main entrance, damaged and separated the safe from the wall and took it away", according to the police.

A "72-year-old watchman at the main Catholic church next door said there was a hum from the running engines of large Yutong Granbird buses during the night, which may have muffled the noise from the damaged vault," the article said.
