The fans wore the team's red jersey and carried a trophy that meant a lot to them.

Police said they couldn't have the procession because they didn't have a permit, which is against the public order.

Arsenal scored a dramatic goal in the last minute to beat a fierce rival 3-2 on Sunday.

The result put the Gunners five points ahead at the top of the table, giving fans all over the world hope that the club could win the English Premier League for the first time in 19 years.

On Monday morning, police stopped five cars carrying Arsenal fans who were traveling together. One of them was carrying a trophy that they had bought at a local store.

Baker Kasule, an Arsenal fan, told the local news site Daily Monitor, "I don't know what we did, but we were just celebrating our win over our rivals Manchester United."

James Mubi, who is in charge of police in the region and says he is an Arsenal fan, told the BBC that he had not looked at the charges against the fans but wondered why they were celebrating when only half of the season's games had been played.

"What would happen if a fight broke out between fans of the same team? They didn't tell the police to make sure their procession was safe "Mr. Mubi said that the idea that the arrest was related to the frequent arrests of opposition party members who also wear red was not true.

Rights groups say that the Public Order Management Act gave police discretionary powers that have been used to limit people's rights.

Agather Atuhaire, a lawyer and rights activist, told the BBC that Uganda's police are still "high-handed," even though the Constitutional Court has "nullified all the draconian provisions that gave them unrestricted power to limit the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of association and assembly."

Arsenal and Manchester United have a lot of fans in Uganda and all over Africa. When they play, Uganda's makeshift video halls are always full to the brim.
