Ashaiman Astroturf project to be named after slain soldier – Kennedy Agyapong

The Ashaiman Astroturf project will be named in honour of the slain soldier, according to Kennedy Agyapong, the Chairman of Parliament's Defence and Internal Affairs Committee.

He made the commitment in Ashaiman on Thursday, 16 March, when the committee visited the soldier's family.

The initiative will bear the young man's name, he said.

Imoro Sherrif, who died in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, was buried on 9 March.

His remains were taken from the mortuary of the 37 Military Hospital to the Burma Camp cemetery in Accra.

Many troops attended the burial of their late 21-year-old colleague at the cemetery.

On 4 March, Imoro Sherrif was brutally murdered.

He was found dead in a pool of blood near the Amania Hotel in Ashaiman, where he was believed to have been stabbed.

On Tuesday, the military high command gave the go-ahead for an intelligence-led hunt for the killers.

During the raid, a number of people reported being brutalised.

Following Sheriff's murder, the police made a number of arrests.

Between Thursday 9 March and Sunday 12 March, suspects Yussif Mohammed, Abdul Gafaru Abdul Karim, Ibrahim Abdul Rakib, Samuel Tetteh alias Wiper, Abubakar Sadick alias Birdman and Safianu Musah alias Dayorgu were arrested.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service, they were arrested at various locations in Ashaiman and its environs.

The arrests followed a week-long intelligence-led operation.

The Ashaiman Circuit Court has denied bail to the six suspects, who were arrested for their alleged role in the killing of a soldier, Imoro Sheriff.

On Monday 13 March, the court rejected their application for release after hearing from the prosecutor, Supt. Sylvester Asare, that it would jeopardise ongoing investigations.

In a statement issued on Sunday 12 March, police gave details of what happened.

The crime scene team recovered several items, including a backpack and a knife with bloodstains on it. Inside the rucksack, the police found a Samsung tablet, an Apple laptop, a military uniform with the name "Imoro" written on it, eight other items of clothing, a Ghana card and a health insurance card with the name "Imoro Sherrif".
