Ashaiman: Soldiers Beat Up Civilians After Alleged Mob Killing Of Soldier

The Taifa area of Ashaiman was placed under a self-imposed curfew on Tuesday morning after several soldiers apparently attacked the area following the alleged killing of a soldier at the weekend.

The soldier was reportedly murdered by a mob in Ashaiman over the weekend.

Following the incident, pictures and videos of the soldier were posted on social media.

According to other reports, a group of people attacked him and stabbed him. The soldier was reportedly on his way home.

Soldiers' response

On Tuesday morning (7 March 2023), at least 20 alleged soldiers invaded the neighbourhood.

They reportedly beat up everyone they encountered while interrogating them.

As a result, many people were forced to lock themselves in their homes for fear of being beaten by the troops.

On social media, some witnesses have shared their accounts of what they saw.

Some people claimed to have seen the military at around 2am.

One witness said that when he woke up at around 4am, the area - which is often busy at that time with many shops open - was still unusually quiet.

He thought it was the rain, but when he went outside he saw some soldiers on the road and no vehicles moving.

When he noticed soldiers approaching, he rushed back inside to close the gate.

He claimed that his brother later told him that he had woken up earlier than usual and had seen soldiers beating other people.

“My mother's shop should have been open by now, but at the moment all the shops are still closed," he said.

He said he saw passing vehicles stopped, male passengers pulled out and beaten up. 'You are killing our colleague,' some of the troops reportedly shouted.

Another eyewitness said the accused soldiers knocked on doors and allegedly slapped anyone who came out.

The local assemblyman reportedly advised citizens to stay away from certain routes.

He claimed to have counted at least 20 armed foot soldiers.

What happened to the alleged killing of the soldier by the mob?

Some said the young soldier was attacked by a gang on his way home.

Some said the mob killed him by stabbing him.

The victim's lifeless body was seen on camera at the scene wearing what appeared to be torn military camouflage trousers.

He had covered his face with a white towel and his military headgear. In addition, his military camouflage luggage was lying next to the deceased.

The Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have not yet commented on the incident.
