Breaking the Rice and Sardines Cycle: Asiedu Nketiah's Push for Better Education In Zongos

After 17 years as General Secretary, General Mosquito leaves the NDC.
Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who is the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), wants the government to focus on better policies and programs in Zongo communities instead of just giving them food.

"We in NDC want to bring something that can help the Zongo communities, so just as our Imam said, we have moved beyond sharing rice and sardines. If you want to help the Zongo people, give their children an education." Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said this in a speech at Kobreso, a town in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region. The speech was given at a ceremony to raise money for a Technical School and a clinic, which was put on by the Ghana Muslim Mission in the area.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah also said at the event that the NDC cares a lot about the Zongo communities all over the country. This is why the NDC set up the Islamic Education Unit at the Ghana Education Service in 1987 to bring the secular subjects taught in the national curriculum into the Islamic schools. The NDC also started big educational projects in other places where it was in charge.

He did say, though, that the story has changed under the current NPP government, which has stopped all of the educational projects that the NDC started in Zongo communities.

"We promised to build Islamic schools, but while you're doing that, you also need a place to train Islamic teachers. That's why we built the Islamic Training College in Wenchi, which is in my district. So, when we ran for office last time, we promised to keep working on that project. However, since we left office, all plans and paperwork have been put on hold. National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah scolded.
