Britain's most dangerous serial killer, 'sets world record for time spent in solitary confinement'

The Mirror says that the notorious killer has now been locked up in HMP Wakefield for a record 16,400 days in a row.

The 69-year-old man has been in a glass cell in solitary confinement since 1979. He killed three people in prison while serving a life sentence for killing John Farrell in 1974. Because of this, he has been called the most dangerous murderer in the UK.

John Farrell, who was 30 years old, was killed by Maudsley, who was only 21 years old at the time.

The killer, who was called "Hannibal the Cannibal" because of false rumors that he ate one of his victims' brains, said he is "happy and content in solitary" and warned that he will kill again if he is ever set free.

Gavin, Maudsley's 40-year-old nephew from Liverpool, talks about how his soft-spoken, "well-read" uncle is happy to be locked away from the rest of the world in a Channel 5 documentary called "HMP Wakefield: Evil Behind Bars."

Maudsley's requests to spend time with other people have been turned down over and over again. He spends his days in a special cell.

In 2021, he lost an appeal to spend Christmas with other people, and he was told that he would have to stay in his "glass box" until he died. He will spend the rest of his life in a cell that is 18 feet by 15 feet and has bulletproof glass. This cell was built just for him in 1983.

He stays in the cell for 23 hours a day, sleeping on a slab of concrete and using a toilet and sink that are bolted to the floor.

He once said that spending most of his day in his small space was like being buried alive in a coffin. He also has a compressed cardboard table and chair.

The Mirror says that Mawdsley is thought to be Britain's longest-serving prisoner after Moors murderer Ian Brady, who served 51 years. Mawdsley has been in jail for 49 years. He died in 2017.

Albert Woodfox, a US prisoner who died last year, had been locked up alone for 43 years before he was released in 2016.
