Ghana midfielder Christian Atsu died tragically in Turkey and the news of his death has left his family deeply saddened.

An elderly woman, who identified herself as Atsu's aunt and mother, appeared in the video to be struggling with conflicting emotions.

Christian Atsu's family are going through a range of emotions after the footballer was buried under the rubble of an earthquake that struck parts of Turkey and Syria on Monday.

Atsu currently lives in Hatay and was playing for local team Hatayspor when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Turkey, including Hatay.

Atsu was one of several people whose homes collapsed in the quake, trapping them under the rubble.

The former Chelsea, Everton and Newcastle great is said to have been recovered alive after more than a day of rescue efforts.

Atsu was discovered on Tuesday morning, according to Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, the Turkish journalist who first reported his capture.

Peace FM's Dan Kwaku Yeboah visited Christian Atsu's family home in Ogbojo, Accra, after hearing the news.

With many family members struggling to control their emotions, the mood in the house was one of conflicting emotions.

In a clip of the visit posted online, Madam Comfort, an aunt who portrays Atsu's mother, could be seen crying.

The 71-year-old, who is Atsu’s mother's younger sister, stated categorically that she believed it would have been better if she had died instead of the player.

Atsu is everything to us, so it will be better for me to die and for him to live. He is our only hope. When I heard the news, I could not sleep. We have been in constant prayer, she said.

Atsu was pronounced dead and his body was taken to Ghana. Although Atsu's aunt was prepared to give her life for him, her wish was denied. The player did not survive.

More than two weeks after the earthquake, on Saturday 18 February 2023, the body of the Black Stars winger was discovered.

Nana Sechere, the player's agent, tweeted that the body of the former Chelsea and Newcastle player had been found.

According to Atsu's club Hatayspor, the player's remains have already been flown to Ghana.
