Church Members Abandon Service To Dig For Gold At Galamsey Site

In the Wassa Amenfi West District of the Western Region, people stopped church service to try to find gold at a galamsey site.

According to reports, Chinese miners have abandoned the 10-acre site because it didn't meet their expectations.

But during church service, some of the miners came to tell the congregation what they had found regarding the news of the abandoned site.

As the news spread, some members of the congregation received a tip-off that led to the whole congregation setting out to look for gold.

According to reports, the congregation dug for three days, from Sunday 5 February to Wednesday 8 February. However, according to some superstitious beliefs the gold was gone after the third day because some of the women went to the site while they were menstruating.

Community members say it's not right for a woman to go to a mining site when she's menstruating, because it's not good for natural resources like gold.

Although the country has a law against illegal mining, it is still going on in the in most regions in the country.
