Churches now use 1 week to do pre-marital counselling reason for the rampant divorce cases – Counsellor reveals

The reason for the high number of divorce cases is that churches now conduct a week of pre-marital counselling, according to a counsellor.

Pastor Doctor Mrs Agnes Odoi, a counsellor and the President of Warrior Women Prayer Ministry Global, blames inadequate premarital counselling for the rising number of divorce cases in the Ghanaian society.

According to her, premarital counselling is supposed to prepare a prospective couple for marriage, but unfortunately, time diverts their attention.

She said, "They end up not focusing on the teaching, but on the dress, the party and what will happen at their wedding," she said in an interview with Paul Anomah Kordieh on e.tv's Christian Connect programme. So they lack the focus to learn or pay attention to what the counsellor is telling them.

She highlighted how many churches do not have the time to offer premarital counselling.

According to a study she conducted in 2020, some churches use as much as two weeks for premarital counselling, and some use seven days because of pressure from family and couples to complete it immediately.

She went on to say that sometimes there are problems with the counsellors because they are not trained professionals.

There are a lot of churches that employ people as counsellors on the basis of their marital status or age, which is not right. She explained: 'This is because there's no training or lecture for them to go through.”

She stressed that although counselling has been interpreted as guidance, the two are different.

“We don't prepare our counsellors and those we call counsellors are not really counsellors because by all indications many of them lack the necessary skills to give counselling," she continued.
