The Ghana Police Service recently met with the leaders of the two major parties, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), to discuss political disagreements and defuse political tensions.

The meeting was called after press statements and petitions were issued by the parties, with each party calling on the police to arrest certain individuals of the other side for alleged offenses. During the meeting, both parties were given the opportunity to express their complaints, with the main issue being comments by some political figures from both sides of the aisle that were considered to be inflammatory.

The police urged the parties to support them, including by constructively criticizing them to do a professional job in line with their constitutional mandate. The police also briefed the parties on two strategic interventions introduced to handle election and politically related incidents as part of the police transformation agenda.

The first strategic intervention was the establishment of the Police Election Security Secretariat, which works with all political parties and stakeholders to enhance the management of security for all elections in the country.

The second intervention was the setting up of a dedicated legal team to subject all politically related incidents to legal scrutiny to establish whether there are elements of crime or otherwise before any police action is taken.

The police will not intervene in any situation where there is no criminality involved. At the meeting, both parties were also updated on the status of political violence and related incidents recorded during the recent internal elections of both parties, including the arrest and prosecution of some members of the NPP for disturbances during their constituency election at Enchi and the arrest of some wanted individuals for disturbances at the national youth and women organizer polls of the NDC at Cape Coast.
