Don’t Treat Us Like Animals; We Have Rights – Ghanaian Gay Activist

Alex Kofi Donkor, the Director of LGBTQ+ Rights Ghana and a humanist, has called for an end to the stigmatization of people who express different sexualities than what is commonly accepted in Ghana and Africa.

Speaking on the Kumasi-based Ultimate Fm, Donkor emphasized that the same respect shown to people who are not part of the LGBTQI+ community must be extended to them too.

Donkor expressed his dissatisfaction with the way discussions about LGBTQI+ people often portray them as less human or even animals.

He found it strange that people would use animals as an example of why people should not be gay, citing the lack of knowledge about animal behavior. He pleaded with people to let others be, emphasizing that LGBTQI+ people have the same rights as any other human being.

Donkor also questioned the level of opposition to the LGBTQI+ community and its activities, particularly by MP for Ningo-Prampram Sam Nartey George.

He wondered whether George would be doing the same if it were his son or daughter who wanted to express their sexuality differently. He also criticized the anti-LGBTQI+ bill currently in parliament, named the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill, and the flip-flopping stance of President Akufo-Addo on the subject.

Overall, Donkor called for tolerance, respect, and recognition of the rights of LGBTQI+ people, just like any other human being.
