Ghana Parliament Urged To Grant Atsu’s Wish By Passing Non-Custodial Sentencing Bill Into Law

Christian Atsu is a Ghanaian man who has made an impassioned plea to the Ghanaian parliament to support the passage of the Non-Custodial Sentences Bill.

A woman on Facebook (@afia.arthur), who also works as a journalist, published a post by Atsu, a Ghanaian international footballer, in which he laments the failure of the legislature to pass the bill into law while active young people in Ghanaian society are imprisoned for petty offences.

Can you fulfil his wish now that he can't be there to help these people, the Parliament of Ghana, as we mourn our brother [Atsu]? The Facebook user made an impassioned plea to politicians.

In 2021, Atsu pleaded with the Ghanaian parliament to pass the Non-Custodial Sentences Bill.

Twelve days after a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria, the body of the Ghana Black Stars winger was found trapped under a mountain of rubble.

Nearly 35,000 people have already died as a result of the disaster that struck the two countries on Monday, 6 February 2023.

Dozens of imprisoned petty criminals have been released thanks to Atsu and Crime Check.

Christian Atsu has dedicated years of his life to rescuing Ghanaians, young and old, who have been imprisoned because they can't afford the modest fines imposed on them by the courts for minor offences.

Recently, he has been actively working with Crime Check TV to pay the fines of many people who are currently serving prison sentences.

In 2018, for example, he donated £7,000, which was used to pay for the release of nine convicts.

A 62-year-old mother and her daughter, who had been imprisoned for stealing maize, were released after the offender paid for their freedom.

Atsu's post in 2021 that triggered the appeal to Parliament by @afia.arthur reads as follows:

"A nation that has no Non-Custodial Law will needlessly throw petty offenders into prison and feed them with the taxpayers' money when such offenders could have desilt our choked and stinking gutters.
"Through financial support from philanthropist, Ali Ibrahim and others, Crime Check foundation has paid the fines and secured the release of these eight petty offenders from Koforidua local prison today.
"I just don’t understand why parliament has consistently pushed aside the passage of the Non-Custodial Sentencing Bill Into Law. God bless Ali Ibrahim."
