Nana Oppong, 42, was one of 13 fugitives listed in a National Crime Agency (NCA) Most Wanted campaign last year. He was listed in connection with an investigation by Essex Police into the death of Robert Powell, 50, on 13 June 2020.

Father-of-three Mr Powell was shot eight times with a 9mm pistol outside a party in Water Lane, Roydon, Harlow. The shooter then drove off. He died in hospital the next day.

Oppong was apprehended trying to enter Morocco at the end of September last year. Oppong's last known address was in Newham, London.

Police said that for operational and security reasons they were unable to publicly announce his arrest at the time.

As well as being added to the NCA's Most Wanted list, Oppong was also the subject of an Interpol Red Notice, a formal request to law enforcement agencies around the world to arrest the perpetrator immediately.

Officers from Morocco's General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) intercepted the fugitive as he was attempting to enter Morocco from Spain using forged passports.

Oppong remains in custody and extradition proceedings are underway.

The NCA's Most Wanted programme, which is co-ordinated with the independent charity CrimeStoppers, Spanish law enforcement and UK police, has so far led to the arrest of seven fugitives.

"Oppong's arrest came after a sustained campaign to locate him and thanks to the vigilance of our Moroccan colleagues and the support of Interpol," said Steve Reynolds, NCA Regional Manager in Spain.

"This is another fantastic result and demonstrates once again that UK law enforcement will never give up in the pursuit of individuals who need to be brought to justice in the UK. We will continue to pursue fugitives, working with our colleagues at home and abroad.
