‘Gold Mafia’: Al Jazeera must retract and apologise to Akufo-Addo

The Ghanaian government is demanding that Al Jazeera retract and apologize for their documentary "Gold Mafia," which implicates President Akufo-Addo in gold smuggling and money laundering schemes. The documentary features an undercover journalist posing as a Chinese gangster who interacts with Alistair Mathias, a financial architect who claims to have orchestrated similar schemes for corrupt politicians in Africa, including Ghana's president, who he claims used to be his lawyer.

The government claims that the documentary contains malicious and defamatory statements that are false and unsubstantiated, and they have demanded that Al Jazeera provide further details to support their claims. However, Al Jazeera reportedly refused to provide the requested details and aired the documentary regardless. The government alleges that the documentary tarnished the reputation of the president and the government of Ghana.

In the documentary, Mathias outlines his modus operandi for siphoning resources from the government and relying on proxies to keep assets hidden. He claims to have inflated government contracts and split the profits with politicians, whom he paid off in offshore accounts. The government has demanded information on the alleged USD 100 million tender for state infrastructure that Mathias received, as well as information on how the president personally benefited unlawfully from it.

President Akufo-Addo denies any involvement in the alleged schemes and denies ever acting as a lawyer for Mathias or his company. Mathias also denies ever being awarded any tender by the Ghanaian government or entering into any government contracts in any African country. The government claims that these denials provide enough grounds for the media network to retract the portions of the documentary.
