Haruna Iddrisu Joins Majority Side

Haruna Iddrisu, a former member of parliament and leader of the minority party, "crossed the carpet" on Thursday to join the majority New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The MP for Tamala South decided to contribute to a report on the African Union Convention on Cross-Border Cooperation (Niamey Convention) from a majority seat, saying he did not have a seat on the minority side.

He said he was given the seat of the MP for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda, who is older than him and has been in the House longer, but cannot take the seat.

If the National Democratic Congress (NDC) thinks it has dealt with the reshuffle of its front bench, the actions of its former leader should put the party on high alert that perhaps the worst is yet to come.

The change of leadership of the party in Parliament has caused a lot of commotion and the NDC caucus in Parliament has split between supporting Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, the new leader.

Last Monday, the problem was resolved at a meeting called by the national leadership, the Council of Elders and the Minority Caucus in Parliament.

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the NDC, was present, as well as Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary, and members of the Council of Elders.

After the vote, the minority seats were rearranged so that the former leaders, who usually sit directly behind the front bench, could be seated.

But Mr Haruna refused to take the seat given to him by former Minority leader Cletus Avoka.

He said, "Excuse me, Mr Speaker, but I have to take your seat because I wasn't sure whether I should take over from Hon. Collins Dauda or not. I told them that Hon. Collins Dauda is older, even older than this House.

"I won't fit into his chair as a well educated person from home. So, Mr Speaker, I am fine with any other chair. I'm still the Member of Parliament for Tamale South.
