Have Courage To Fire Or Reshuffle Non-Performing Appointees – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufour says that heads of state shouldn't be afraid to fire people who aren't doing their jobs well.

He said that it was up to them to make such brave decisions to keep their government on track.

Already, there have been calls for the Akufo-Addo government to either move ministers around or fire those who haven't done what was expected after six years.

During a meeting with the Institute of Economic Affairs at his home, the former President said that the current presidents of Africa need to take the bull by the horns.

“I didn’t reshuffle just for the frequency of it; no. The president’s role is like the coach; not just a team leader. You have to know what your ministers are doing, whether they are being positive or whether they’re just being average when you expect more from them, and you should have the courage to say you don’t belong here, go there, or perhaps sit aside and that thing should not be seasonal; it should be continuous.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo has said that he has no plans to change his ministers any time soon. He insisted that the people he had chosen were doing a good job.

Even though President Akufo-Addo said he always evaluates his ministers' work, he said, "Many of them have done outstanding work for me." I look at how much they have done because that is what I care about."

President Akufo-Addo added, "If the results match expectations, I don't have a strong reason to listen to the call."

The President also thinks that sometimes people who ask for a reshuffle have something else in mind.

“The calls come for all kinds of reasons; NDC wanting to destabilise the government is one. There are people who are also looking for jobs.”

The only time President Akufo-Addo changed the order of his ministers was in August 2018 during his first term.

After people said his government was too big, he changed some of his ministers and got rid of some of their jobs.

Sarah Adwoa Safo, who had been out of work for a long time, also recently lost her job because of President Akufo-Addo.

She was in charge of issues related to women, children, and social protection.
