Head on collision between buses kills 9 passengers

Early on Sunday morning, March 25, 2023, a fatal crash occurred on the Accra to Kumasi highway, resulting in the instant death of nine (9) passengers.

The collision involved two Toyota Hiace and nineteen (19) other passengers were seriously injured and are receiving treatment in the hospital.

The crash happened at Birimso near Bunso stretch. A trailer truck carrying a container had also been involved in a previous accident on the side of the road where the collision occurred.

Eyewitnesses including drivers and nearby residents rushed to the scene to help with the rescue effort. Kwame Dan, a driver who went to the scene, expressed concern about excessive speeding by some buses on the road.

The Bunso Station Officer of Ghana National Fire Service, ADO II Samuel Doe, confirmed that they received a distress call about the crash at around 4:30 am and dispatched a rescue team to the scene immediately. Victims who were trapped in the vehicles were extricated and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

ADO II Samuel Doe confirmed that nine passengers died on the spot while other victims were seriously injured. He described the impact of the crash as devastating, with one of the vehicles mangled to the size of a taxi. Unfortunately, this was not the only road accident that occurred within the same weekend.

Eight (8) passengers aboard a commercial Hyundai vehicle from Juapong heading to Accra also died when the vehicle collided head-on with a long heavy-duty truck after the driver failed to wait for the truck to pass at a narrow section of the road.

Additionally, a Toyota Corolla knocked down a pedestrian to death at Nyamebekyere on the Koforidua to Adukrom road. In total, 18 road fatalities were recorded within 24 hours in the region during the weekend.
