High Taxes or Hidden Fees? Ghanaian Restaurant Bill Sparks Social Media Outcry

A recent bill presented to a customer at The Brasserie, a restaurant in Ghana, has caused quite a commotion on social media. The customer purchased a plate of fried rice and a prawn with a Jam Jar by the bottle, which came to a total cost of GH¢616.20.

However, the inclusion of various taxes resulted in a final bill of GH¢818.93, with taxes contributing a difference of GH¢202.73. The high tax rates have sparked outrage among Ghanaians, with Twitter user Dr Sey Kekessie sharing a photo of the bill and stating that taxes in Ghana are excessive.

The controversy drew the attention of Tax Law Ghana's Twitter handle, which explained that some of the taxes charged do not go to the government, but to the restaurant itself. The handle pointed out that the "SC" and "SUR" charges on the bill are not government taxes, but rather, are kept by the restaurant. The "SC" is likely a service charge.

The social media post has garnered various reactions from Ghanaians, with many expressing their frustration and disappointment over the high taxes in restaurants. The viral photo has once again brought to light the issue of taxes in Ghana and its impact on consumers.
