How I Was Made A Slave In UAE - Woman Reveals

Ruth Koomson moved back to Ghana from the United Arab Emirates months ago. She has talked about how she felt like a slave when she worked in Abu Dhabi.

Ruth told DJ Nyaami on SVTV AFRICA that she worked as a housekeeper for almost four years, but that she never left the house on her own.

"I wasn't able to go out. I would only leave the house when they did. So I had no freedom for almost four years. If you work with a family in UAE, you have no freedom. I'd say it's slavery because not being able to move around is a sign of slavery. "You don't move unless I tell you to," she said.

Ruth said that her job was pretty good because she did not have to pay for anything or buy anything. She ate well, but sometimes she had to work too much.

"I could eat as much as I wanted for free, but I didn't get as much sleep because they came home late at night when I was asleep. And when they come, they'll make you do little jobs."

Ruth also said that she went to the UAE with her boyfriend, but that they broke up when they got there. Ruth says that her boyfriend found a job in Dubai while she was working in Abu Dhabi. Miss Koomson said that they couldn't see each other, and she said that this made them angry and drove them apart.

Ruth said that she was sorry about what happened, but that she learned from it and wants to get better. She is learning about nursing in general right now.
