How Idi Amin's Right-Hand Man Died A Painful Death

One of the officers tasked with purging the Uganda Army of anti-Amin elements and the last remaining hardline Obote supporters was Maliyamungu.

He was given "complete authority to execute anyone in the army," including superior officers, because of this. Maliyamungu collaborated with Col. Ali, Col. Musa, and Major Malera to put an end to the armed opposition to the new government.

Following that, he murdered hundreds of people who disagreed with him politically. He later boasted about "single-handedly mastermind[ing]" the massacre of civilians who were allegedly Amin's enemies.

Maliyamungu and his family entered Zaire after Idi Amin's rule came to an end and Tanzania seized control of Kampala. He moved with a sizable portion of his wealth with the intention of starting a business.

Maliyamungu later took part in the West Nile region's pro-Amin insurrection during the Ugandan Bush War.
What caused his death?

In collaboration with other Amin followers, he gathered a force of fighters and invaded the West Nile region from Zaire. In Sudan, where he afterwards settled, he was poisoned and passed away in February 1984.
