Monday, the singer and TV host said on Asaase 99.5 Accra's Between Hours Show that she was fired from GTV for criticizing the Kufuor government.
Jackie Ankrah, a Ghanaian TV host, said that she was fired in 2006 because she said bad things about the government during a newspaper review on the GTV Breakfast Show.
"I was asked to sit in for a newspaper review on the GTV Breakfast Show, but none of the other panelists showed up. I saw that as a chance to show off my journalism skills, so I blasted the government left, right, and center," Ankrah said in an interview on Asaase 99.5 Accra's Between Hours Show on Monday.
"When I got home, I got a call that said, "Please don't come back; they told us we should fire you."... She told the show's host, Naa Ashorkor, "bye, bye."
Ankrah, who is also a singer, says that the president at the time, John Kufuor, liked her personality. Since she is also a singer, she strongly believes that other officials may have been behind her firing from the state broadcaster.
She did say, though, that it's not in her nature to make people feel bad or upset, but that people in power sometimes think they can't be criticized, and she'd like to see that change.
Ankrah said, "I believe that if people put you in a position of power, you owe them, you should be accountable, and you should listen to the people."
