‘I dress dead people for a living – I even take requests for what they should wear’

Dressing dead people for a living is an unusual job, but for one Ghanaian woman, it has become her life’s work. She takes requests for what the deceased should wear for their final farewell and takes it upon herself to make sure those wishes are respected.

Her name is Nana Yaa, and she has been dressing the dead for the past five years. She says she was inspired to take up the occupation after witnessing how distressed families were when they were unable to give their loved ones a proper send off with the right clothing.

As a result, she has dedicated her career to helping families honor their departed by providing them with beautiful garments to dress the deceased in funeral attire. She also assists with the arrangement of the body, and makes sure the family’s requests are taken into consideration - no matter how specific they are.

Nana Yaa says her job is not easy and requires a great amount of patience and understanding. “I think the key to my success has been listening to the families,” she says. “I have to put myself in their shoes and feel what they’re going through.”

When asked what motivates her to continue doing the job, she says, “I understand that people grieve differently and in different ways, and I just want to help families find closure and create beautiful memories for their loved ones.” She adds that she believes in giving the deceased dignity and respect, and wants to ensure that their last farewell is a meaningful one.

Nana Yaa’s dedication and commitment to her job has been recognized by many, and her services are in high demand. She has helped families from all over the country and has even been hired to handle the funerary arrangements of well-known personalities.

Her work is an inspiring reminder of the importance of providing loved ones with a meaningful and respectful send-off. After all, it is something they will never forget.
