I feel guilty for my parents conviction - Senator’s daughter speaks out

In a recent and highly controversial case, Nigerian Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a doctor named Obinna Obeta were sentenced to prison after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and Dr. Obinna Obeta have been sentenced to imprisonment for their involvement in a criminal conspiracy. The Old Bailey, having found them guilty, handed down the verdict on Friday, May 5, 2023. Their conviction stemmed from their scheme to exploit a young man, David Nwamini, for a kidney transplant intended for Ekweremadu's daughter, Sonia. David, a 21-year-old trader from Lagos, was enticed to the United Kingdom by Obeta, who had been contacted by the Ekweremadus to facilitate the transplant.

The plan, however, unraveled when the medical professionals at the Royal Free Hospital declined to proceed with the costly procedure. Senator Ike Ekweremadu received a sentence of nine years and eight months, while Beatrice and Obeta were sentenced to four years and six months and ten years, respectively.

Despite Sonia's personal disagreement with her parents' conviction, she expressed her support for them as their daughter. In an interview with the BBC, Sonia revealed her distress at witnessing her parents' situation and emphasized the need for the family to reconcile and move forward. Sonia, who suffers from Nephrotic syndrome, a kidney disorder resulting in excessive protein in urine, explained that she had no involvement in the process as her family managed all her medical needs.

However, she expressed her feelings of guilt, believing that the entire incident unfolded because of her condition. David, the victim in this case, pleaded with the UK court to allow him to remain in the country, fearing for his safety if he were to return to Nigeria. In his impact statement, he conveyed his concerns about potential arrest or harm, citing the Ekweremadus as a dangerous influence.

He also mentioned that someone had visited his father in Nigeria to pressure him into dropping the case. The arrest of the couple upon their arrival at Heathrow Airport in June 2022 further underlines the gravity of this case.
