IGP urged to arrest Bryan Acheampong

James Agalga, the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, has requested that the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, arrest Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, for making public statements that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not hand over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Acheampong, who is also the Minister of Agriculture and formerly served as the Minister of State in Charge of National Security, made these statements to party supporters during a health march in Mpraeso, Eastern Region on March 8th, 2023. He threatened that the NPP would not let the NDC win the election by using violence, threats, or foolishness, and stressed that the NPP had "the men" to ensure their victory.

Acheampong declared that the NPP would remain in power at all costs and that the NPP was fixing the economy, which would lead to their electoral success.

During the same event, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia criticized former President John Mahama and the NDC, stating that they could not boast of any transformational achievements during their time in power. He cited policies such as mobile money interoperability, one district-one factory, digital address, Free SHS, and zongo constituency fund as examples of the NPP's achievements.

Bawumia also claimed that the Akufo-Addo administration had created 2.1 million jobs so far, with 975,000 in the private sector and 1.2 million in the public sector. He challenged anyone to dispute this claim and dared to dream that Ghana could be a prosperous nation like Dubai, South Korea, or Singapore.

In response to Acheampong's statements, Agalga issued a statement accusing him of posing a grave threat to Ghana's democracy and calling for his arrest and prosecution. He cited Acheampong's track record and the Akufo-Addo government's behavior towards the electoral commission as reasons for concern.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, also spoke at the event, promising that the government would fix the economy by the end of the year and urging the public to support the NPP's efforts.
