Immigration officer, Okada rider shot at Aflao border

At the Aflao Beat 9 Border Post, a Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer and a motorcycle (Okada) rider got into a fight over the nationality of Okada's passenger. The fight got out of hand, and the rider and another immigration officer were shot.

Bullets from the gun of a soldier who came to stop the chaos hit both the rider and the immigration officer in the leg.

After the accident around 9 a.m. on Sunday, the two people who were hurt were taken to the Aflao Municipal Hospital right away (January 15, 2023).

The immigration officer was treated and released from the hospital, and the rider was taken to the Ho Teaching Hospital.

Tension

The incident has made things worse between the people who live in the border town and the security agencies.

Maxwell Lugudor, the Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), told Graphic Online's Alberto Mario Noretti that an investigation had begun.

When he talked to Graphic Online today, he didn't give the names of the immigration officer and the rider right away.

The MCE, who is also the head of the Municipal Security Council, said that when the immigration officer saw the motorcycle rider at the border that morning, he told the rider to stop so that he could check out the pillion rider.

The immigration officer was said to have insisted that the passenger on the back of the bike was not a Ghanaian but someone from another country.

Mr. Lugudor said that the rider said he was carrying his brother on the bike and stopped the officer from questioning him to find out his nationality.

Exchanges

He said that caused the immigration officer and the rider to get angry with each other and fight.

When the officer saw danger, he called the soldier to the scene to help.

Still, the rider wouldn't let the immigration officer talk to the pillion rider to find out about him or her.

The MCE said that things went from bad to worse when the rider and the soldier got into a fierce fight in which the soldier fired his duty gun.

During this, the bullet or bullets hit both the rider and the immigration officer.

As of Tuesday afternoon, some locals who talked to Graphic Online said that the okada rider was a 35-year-old man named Kwaku Tengey.
