It has been 7 wasted years under Akufo-Addo govt – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, who was president before Akufo-Addo, said the past seven years had been a waste, especially in the energy sector.

Mr Mahama said he left behind the Tweneboa Enyenra Ntomme (TEN) and Sankofa oil fields.

But, he said, there had been no new upstream production in the last seven years.

Mr Mahama said in a tweet: "Wasted years! We bequeathed to the Akufo-Addo gov’t two new oil fields, TEN and Sankofa. Greed and ineptitude as against national interest mean a sad reality of no additional production activity in our upstream oil sector in the last 7 years.”

Before President Akufo-Addo took office in 2017, Mr Mahama said the policies and programmes put in place by his government had helped stabilise Ghana's economy.

He said Mr Akufo-Addo only needed to pick up where he left off with the economy, but he had thrown away all the progress.

Speaking at Chatham House on Friday 27 January, he said: "When President Akufo-Addo came in, the economy was stable. All they had to do was continue from there, but unfortunately they brought us here.

Mr Mahama also said his government's biggest mistake was not telling people about the good things it had done.

He said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) thought Ghanaians would see the projects he had undertaken.

"We didn't force people to see what we had done because we thought they would see it anyway. We did a lot," he said.

He also said: "Maybe the next time we get the chance, our leaders should make it a point to tell the people what we have done".

His speech was about Africa's strategic priorities and its role in the world.
