John Dumelo storms Assin North with Okada to campaign for the NDC

In a surprising turn of events, John Dumelo, the popular actor and politician, has taken on a new role as an "okada man" in Assin North. His aim is to show his unwavering support for the NDC candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, who is seeking re-election as a member of parliament. Alongside other prominent NDC members, Dumelo made his presence felt in the area as they campaigned vigorously to secure the seat for their party.

Dumelo shared his campaign adventure on Twitter, sharing updates of his motorcycle ride through Assin Kushea. During the ride, he was heard enthusiastically shouting the NDC slogan, '3y3 Zu,' while some supporters, although not captured on camera, responded with the corresponding chant, '3y3 Za.'

It's important to note that the Supreme Court had previously ruled on the validity of James Gyakye Quayson's election. The court explained that, as per the law, he was ineligible to run for the Assin North seat in 2020. According to Article 94(2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution, which prohibits individuals with dual citizenship from becoming Members of Parliament, the court deemed Quayson constitutionally barred from running.

The court clarified that the crucial date to consider is when the Electoral Commission opens nominations, not the election or the swearing-in of MPs. Since Quayson had failed to renounce his Canadian citizenship before applying to run for the seat in October 2020, the court concluded that he was constitutionally disqualified.

In a unanimous decision, the seven-member panel of the Supreme Court, with Justice Nene Amegatcher as the author and Justice Jones Dotse presiding, reiterated the interpretation of Article 94(2)(a). The panel included Justices Mariama Owusu, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi, and Barbara Ackah-Yensu.

In conclusion, John Dumelo has taken on a unique role as an "okada man" to campaign for the NDC candidate in the Assin North by-elections. The Supreme Court's previous ruling regarding James Gyakye Quayson's ineligibility due to his dual citizenship provides an important backdrop to the ongoing political dynamics in the region. As the election date approaches, it remains to be seen how Dumelo's campaign efforts and the court's decision will influence the outcome of the by-election.
