Kumawu by-election: NPP buying votes with ‘Tugyimie’ rice – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is urging voters in the Sekyere Kumawu constituency in the Ashanti region to support the NDC Parliamentary candidate, Kwasi Amankwaa, popularly known as Tom Cee, in the upcoming by-election on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

During his campaign in Bodomase near Kumawu, Mahama expressed his condolences to the family of the late Member of Parliament for the constituency, Philip Basoa, who tragically passed away. He described Basoa's death as unfortunate but a sacrifice for the constituency, stating that it has drawn the attention of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government towards addressing the developmental needs of the area.

Mahama emphasized that despite consistently voting for the NPP since 1992, the constituency has not received adequate attention and prioritization in terms of development. He highlighted several developmental projects initiated by the NDC government, such as the construction of the Kumawu to Drobonso road, Kumawu to Agogo road, Kumawu district water project, and Kumawu district project. He criticized the NPP government for abandoning these projects for over six years, except for some recent activity due to the upcoming elections.

Assuring the electorate, Mahama pledged that if elected, the NDC government would complete the unfinished projects and address the constituency's needs. He called on the people of Kumawu to vote massively for the NDC Parliamentary candidate in the by-election to send a message that they can no longer be taken for granted.

Expressing his disappointment, Mahama also criticized the alleged vote-buying campaign led by the ruling government, where rice is being distributed door-to-door. He urged voters to accept the rice but emphasized that their votes should not be influenced by such tactics. He encouraged them to exercise their voting power wisely and peacefully on Tuesday.

Mahama concluded by assuring the electorate that the NDC would win the 2024 general elections. He expressed confidence that a positive change would occur in Kumawu through the election of Kwasi Amankwaa and called for a change in the NPP government's leadership.
