Man Kills Girlfriend in Dispute over Aborted Pregnancy

In a tragic incident that unfolded at Trom Junction-5 in Koforidua on Saturday, June 17, 2023, a 26-year-old man named Godwin Darko has been accused of allegedly killing his girlfriend, Felicia Abena Oparebea, aged 23. The unfortunate incident occurred during a heated argument over an aborted pregnancy.

During the suspect's first appearance at the Koforidua Magistrate Court "A" for committal processes on Tuesday, June 20, the prosecution revealed that Darko questioned why Oparebea had terminated the pregnancy without consulting him. According to Sergeant George Defia, the prosecutor, Darko stabbed his girlfriend multiple times in the neck, resulting in her immediate demise within her room.

Following the gruesome act, the suspect managed to leave the house undetected and sought solace with his mother, who happens to be the Queen Mother of Suhum Nifa Ankobea. His mother accompanied him to the police station, where he turned himself in.

In light of the circumstances, the prosecution requested that the court, presided over by Her Honour Nana Ama Dabbah Fynn, remand the suspect to allow the police to conduct further investigations, including the search for the weapon used in the heinous crime. Consequently, the court adjourned the case until July 4, 2023.

Expressing her deep sorrow, the suspect's mother, Nana Dede Klottey, who also holds the title of Suhum Nifa Ankobea Hemaa, shared that her son and the deceased had frequently encountered misunderstandings in their relationship. She had made efforts to mediate and resolve their issues, only to be devastated by this despicable incident.

In a plea to the family of the deceased, Darko expressed his desire to hold a meeting in order to make preparations for Oparebea's burial, while the criminal prosecution proceedings continue.

It is indeed a heart-wrenching event, and as the legal proceedings unfold, we hope that justice will be served for the untimely loss of Felicia Abena Oparebea's life.
