Meet Hajia Afrah Nasira, the NDC candidate who defeated the Duffuor Family

The parliamentary candidacy election in Sekyere Afram Plains witnessed a significant shift in power, as the incumbent MP, Dr Alex Adomako Mensah, fell short in his bid for re-election. Hajia Afrah Nasira emerged as the victorious candidate, with Dr Kwabena Duffuor II securing second place. This outcome marks a notable change in the political landscape of the Ashanti Region and sets the stage for a new era of representation in Sekyere Afram Plains under the leadership of Hajia Afrah Nasira.

In a surprising turn of events, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Sekyere Afram Plains, Dr Alex Adomako Mensah, was unable to secure his position for a fourth term representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Despite his previous successes, Dr Adomako Mensah came in third place in a four-man race, receiving only 86 votes. The victory went to Hajia Afrah Nasira, who garnered an impressive 211 votes and emerged as the NDC parliamentary candidate elect for Sekyere Afram Plains.

Coming in second was Dr Kwabena Duffuor II, a political newcomer, who obtained 208 votes. The fourth candidate, Prof Edward Brenyah, lagged behind with a total of 65 votes. It is noteworthy that Dr Adomako Mensah is the brother of Dr Kwabena Duffuor, who withdrew from the presidential primary race on the eve of the election.

This defeat marks a significant setback for Dr Adomako Mensah and makes him the first casualty in the Ashanti Region to lose his bid for the NDC slot. Currently, the NDC holds only four out of the 47 seats in the Ashanti Region, namely Ejura-Sekyedumase, Sekyere Afram Plains, Asawase, and New Edubiase.

Hajia Afrah Nasira's triumph not only secured her victory but also resulted in the displacement of both Dr Kwabena Duffuor's son and brother from the race. With her success, she has paved the way for a fresh representation of the NDC in Sekyere Afram Plains.
