My Lord, I want more food - Slain soldier's alleged 'killer' pleads in court

One of the six suspects who were on trial for the murder of Trooper Sheriff Imoro at Taifa, a suburb of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, has been released on health grounds.

The court presided over by Simon J. Gaga granted the suspect bail in the amount of GHC150,000 with three sureties, two of which must be justified by landed properties.

The decision was made despite objections from the prosecution, who wanted the accused persons to be remanded. Two lawyers represented the accused persons who were charged with dishonestly receiving stolen items and pleaded with the court to grant them bail.

Counsel for three of the four accused persons told the court that the third accused, Ibrahim Abdul Rakib, was suffering from an ulcer while in custody and requested that he be released on bail to seek proper medical attention.

The prosecution opposed the bail and requested an adjournment of the case, citing advanced investigations that required ample time to complete. The prosecutor argued that keeping the accused persons in custody was in the interest of both the accused and the public and that granting them bail would impede and interfere with investigations.

The prosecution dismissed the claim of one suspect who demanded bail on health grounds, stating that the accused had not complained of any illness while in custody. The prosecutor indicated that the prosecution was ready to provide medical treatment to the accused person at the Police Hospital. However, the court eventually granted bail to the third accused person on health grounds.

During the trial, one of the prime suspects, Samuel Tetteh, complained that the food being offered to him in custody was insufficient. The court remanded the remaining five accused persons into police custody for investigations to continue and directed the police to take good care of them to ensure they were healthy enough to stand trial.

The two main accused persons are being tried for conspiracy to commit the crimes of attempted robbery and robbery in connection with the murder of the military officer. The remaining four accused persons are defending themselves on the charge of dishonestly receiving stolen items.
