NDC declares Assin North ‘boot-for-boot’ if…

In a press conference held on Friday, May 19, the Assin North Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) issued a strong warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding potential violence during a possible by-election declared by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).

The NDC Constituency Chairman, Felix Benefo, accused the NPP of plotting nefarious activities in the constituency. He specifically mentioned the NPP's alleged involvement in damaging their MP's car using state security forces during the December 7, 2020 elections. Mr. Benefo firmly stated that if the NPP attempts to incite violence, the NDC will retaliate. He emphasized their readiness to confront them head-on and expressed that a by-election in Assin North would be a decisive and intense event.

The press conference was prompted by a recent Supreme Court ruling on May 17, which ordered the removal of James Gyakye Quayson's name from all legislative records. The court found his nomination, elections, and subsequent swearing-in as a lawmaker to be unconstitutional due to his alleged violation of Article 94(2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution.

However, the Assin North branch of the NDC criticized the ruling, deeming it politically motivated and lacking common sense. They suggested that individuals such as Assin Central MP Ken Ohene Agyapong were behind the removal of the Assin North MP. The NDC Constituency Chairman expressed support for Mr. Gyakye Quayson in any upcoming by-election, assuring him of the party's unwavering support during these challenging times. He emphasized that the party executives stand firmly behind him and will work tirelessly to maintain his position if a by-election takes place.

In conclusion, the Assin North Constituency branch of the NDC has issued a warning to the NPP, cautioning against the use of violence in a potential by-election. They expressed their readiness to respond in kind if provoked. The press conference followed a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated James Gyakye Quayson's status as a lawmaker, which the NDC branch criticized as politically motivated. Despite the ruling, they pledged their full support to Mr. Gyakye Quayson in the event of a by-election, assuring him of their unwavering commitment.
