NDC sponsoring independent candidate to split NPP votes – Wontumi

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti region is confident that they will win the Kumawu by-election on May 23, 2023 against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and an independent candidate who was formerly a member of the NPP.

The NPP has elected Ernest Yaw Anim, a Kumawu Bodomase native, as their parliamentary candidate to compete against the NDC's Kwasi Amankwa, who is the grandson of the late Sekyere Kumawu Member of Parliament Philip Atta Basoa, and Kwaku Duah, an independent candidate and nephew to the Paramount chief of Kumawu, Barimah Tweneboah Koduah.

Chairman Wontumi, the NPP's chairman for Ashanti, spoke to party members after the successful primary at Kumawu Besore and assured them of a resounding victory. He promised to lead a tight campaign in the constituency that would leave no breathing space for the NDC and the independent candidate being sponsored by the major opposition party. Chairman Wontumi claimed that the independent candidate is powerless against the NPP's candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim, who is a native of Bodomase, where the independent candidate is from.

He also questioned why the independent candidate adopted the color green, which is known to be the NDC's color, on his campaign poster and where he would get the funds to contest the 2024 election if he doesn't have the NDC's backing. Chairman Wontumi pledged to mobilize and unite all the aspirants who lost to face the independent candidate in the election activities, and he reiterated that they will win the by-election.
