NPP’s mistakes have led to hardship in Ghana – Kennedy Agyapong admits

Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, claims the current government has made mistakes that have contributed to the economic hardship Ghanaians are currently experiencing.

He did not completely ignore the effects of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which are ruining economies around the world.

"I always say that if we had a vote around the world today, 80 per cent of the governments in power would lose because the people cannot bear the misery everywhere, which makes any government unpopular," he said.

However, he believes that some policies and programmes have been implemented incorrectly, which has also contributed to the country's difficulties.

I'd also add that, with the benefit of hindsight, there are some things we did wrong that I think would have prevented the current state of the economy.

He vehemently criticised the money wasted on NABCO, saying it could have been used to set up businesses and employ the youth instead of the three-year programme that ended and left the graduates it had enrolled unemployed.

"NABCO employed about 100,000 children at GHC700 per month or GHC700 million. With 700 million, we could have created industries for these young people. Even if you don't have 100,000 people working, at least the sustainability will be there to provide employment for young people," he argued.

Despite the NPP's mistakes, he says, it is important to "fight the propaganda of the NDC because a similar thing happened under President Kufuor where he did wonderfully well for the first six to seven years and the world price of crude oil went up, transport, food, Ghanaians didn't forgive the NPP.
