Naked Demo? NDC in Internal Dispute

The Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana has become embroiled in a dispute, as members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) allege attempts to impose a parliamentary candidate on the constituency.

Women groups and grassroots supporters in all 13 wards of the constituency are particularly aggrieved, with some threatening to hold a naked demonstration.

The dispute centres on three NDC aspirants who have filed their nominations to contest the parliamentary primary of the party in the area. Last week, the party postponed vetting of the three candidates indefinitely over claims of discrepancies on their nomination forms.

However, according to a publication by the DAILY GUIDE, there are rumours that certain individuals within the NDC are trying to disqualify two of the aspirants for no apparent reason, to pave the way for the third aspirant, John Setor Dumelo, who lost the last election to the incumbent MP, Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

These supposed party officials are adopting overt and covert tactics to disqualify the two aspirants in order for John Dumelo to go unopposed. However, this has raised tensions among grassroots supporters who argue that John Dumelo cannot be trusted and has been unreliable in the past.

They also allege that he fled the constituency immediately after the last elections and refused to show appreciation to the grassroots.

The women’s groups have vowed to fight against any attempt to impose John Dumelo as the parliamentary candidate, arguing that it would be undemocratic and against the fundamental human rights of the party's grassroots. They claim that John Dumelo lacks leadership abilities and cannot unite people, considering the many challenges confronting the constituency.
