Nurses and midwives’ strike leaves patients stranded at Manhyia hospital

Some patients are being sent home from the Manhyia Government hospital as nurses start an indefinite strike to get the Ashanti Regional National Service Secretariat (NSS) boss fired.

This happened after the 72-hour deadline they had given to get rid of Alex Opoku-Mensah from his job right away for "misconduct."

Some patients in the surgical ward have been asked to go home with their families until the nurses can get back to work.

Because of how the NSS director treated them, the nurses at Manhyia hospital are going on an indefinite strike.
Some family members are stuck because of this change, and they are looking for ways to get sick family members to the house.

One of them told JoyNews that his father is very sick, but they have been given medicine to treat him at home.

The strike will last as long as it takes because the Regional NSS boss, Alex Opoku-Mensah, was rude to a nurse at the Manhyia Hospital because of how the nurse talked to his daughter.

Sources say that the nurse called the house officer to suggest a change in the prescription because the pharmacy didn't have what the house officer had written down.

Dr. Hussein, who is in charge of medical care, said that the house officer was upset by how the nurse talked to her.

Dr. Hussein said that the house officer was with her father when she talked on the phone with the nurse.

Mr. Opoku-Mensah, who had apparently overheard the conversation, was upset by the way the nurse talked to his daughter and went with her to the hospital to talk to the nurse.

In an audio recording that has gone viral, Mr. Opoku-Mensah said, "You are very upset...
Who made dog?...
you envy her, you don't respect. Are you a doctor? Who are you? Are you mad? Is it your hospital? You're a useless woman and a stupid idiot for being a nurse. Do you recognize me? I am in charge of the National Service Scheme in my area. I'm in charge of some of you."

Since then, the National Service Secretariat has put Mr. Opoku-Mensah on leave.

He has, however, taken full responsibility for what he did and said, "That's not my style."
