The incident unfolded as the madman was seen with an expensive Android phone among a crowd of people purchasing items from a petty trader near a public primary school.

Curiosity arose when the madman, upon being approached by some unidentified individuals, reportedly removed the SIM card from the Android phone, swallowed it, and fled from the scene. This unexpected action left the crowd astonished, as they initially assumed he had stolen the phone. However, his bizarre behavior revealed that he might not be insane after all.

The eyewitness described how the crowd apprehended the man and began beating him in an attempt to extract more information. It was later revealed by individuals who arrived at the scene that the suspect was an ex-convict who had been caught for similar offenses in the past. Adding to the perplexity of the situation, a tricycle operator claimed that the suspect had been found with the alleged ritualist earlier that day.

The tricycle operator, who was also briefly detained, shared that when they arrived at the police station, authorities discovered bank messages on the suspect's Android phone, indicating that he had over N12 million in his bank account. However, the operator was released shortly after, so he was unaware of the subsequent events. He was taken aback when he encountered the same madman a few days later.

Confirming the incident, the state police spokesperson, DDP Bright Edafe, stated that one person had been set on fire by a mob in the Ughelli community. However, the motive behind the incident remains unknown at this point.
