Okudzeto Ablakwa Must Be Punished – Lawyer Ampaw

Private lawyer Maurice Ampaw was surprised by the "disregard for the law" shown by North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

This was because a video that went viral showed the lawmaker kicking away a writ filed against him by the Executive Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, who wanted to stop any further public publications for 10 days.

He said as a lawmaker, Mr Ablakwa shouldn't have such "disregard" for legal documents, the power of the court or the legal process.

He said Mr Ablakwa should have given the papers to his lawyers so that they could "file an appeal".

"As a lawmaker, his actions tell the public that one, you have disrespected and disregarded the authority of the court, two, you have interfered with the administration of the legal process and three, you have disregarded the legal process, therefore the document, and that's a serious problem," he said.

Lawyer Ampaw said Mr Ablakwa should be summoned to appear before Parliament's Privileges Committee to answer for disrespecting the court.

"From this point of view, it seems to me that Ablakwa should be punished. Since Alban Bagbin is a lawyer, Ablakwa's colleagues should have already asked him to appear before the Privileges Committee of Parliament to face contempt charges," he said.

He also said the Attorney General could punish Mr Ablakwa if too many people saw the video.

"And if the video becomes too popular, I think the Attorney General could step in and charge him with contempt for undermining and insulting the court," he said on Accra's Neat FM.

In a Facebook post, Mr Ablakwa showed pictures of the document and said his lawyers would work on it.
