Our salary is below GH¢2,000 so we’II keep travelling – GH Midwives

Madam Leticia Asaba Atia, the Greater Accra Regional Chairperson for Registered Midwives, has expressed concern about the low compensation Ghanaian nurses and midwives receive for their services.

Despite the restrictions imposed by the United Kingdom on Ghana, midwives and nurses are still needed in the UK and will continue to seek better opportunities abroad. Madam Atia revealed during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm’s Frontline that no midwife has a desire to travel abroad, but the poor working conditions in Ghana are a major factor in their decision to do so.

Madam Atia noted that if the working conditions in Ghana improve, nurses and midwives will be more inclined to stay and work within the country.

She added that inadequate medical equipment and facilities make it challenging to provide quality healthcare in Ghana. As such, if a midwife is offered an opportunity to work as a baby nurse in the UK and earn more than what they currently earn in Ghana, it would be difficult for them to decline such an offer.

Madam Atia further explained that it is not just about the money, but also about the work environment. With poor working conditions and low salaries, Ghanaian midwives and nurses are finding it challenging to sustain themselves.

According to Madam Atia, midwives in Ghana earn between Ghc1,500 and Ghc1,800 per month, which is below Ghc2,000. Those who earn more than Ghc2,000 do not earn up to Ghc3,000. Some midwives work in both public and private hospitals to make ends meet.

In response to a question about whether midwives are leaving Ghana, Madam Atia confirmed that they are. She cited the poor working conditions and low salaries as the primary reasons for their departure.

Madam Atia also disclosed that she had been offered the opportunity to work abroad but declined due to her age. However, if she were younger, she would have considered the opportunity to seek better prospects.
