Police Housing Project To Be Completed In February – Deputy Minister

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, responsible for Lands and Forestry, Mr Benito Owusu-Bio, has announced that 504 housing units for the Ghana Police Service would be ready in the second week of February 2023.

The first phase of the project has a fully furnished clinic, a school block for JHS and Primary, a police mobile maintenance unit, a police station, a fuel depot and a garage.

It includes a 10-Unit 2-bedroom accommodation for the engineering and mechanic department of the service with offices, canteens, and a police post.
The Minister made this known while on a working visit to inspect the ongoing housing project for personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Meteorological Service, Civil Aviation, and the DVLA in Kwabenya (Atomic) on Thursday.

Speaking to the media, the Deputy Minister disclosed that the project being developed by Unique Development Company was a land swap agreement between the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, Lands Commission, Ministry of Interior, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, and the private developer.

Mr Owusu-Bio stated that the agreement was reached after the government realized that the Police Service was in desperate need of accommodation, which also coincided with the government’s plan to build Modern Barracks for the security services as their numbers continued to grow.

He stated that the construction began in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, progress was interrupted and nearly halted; however, with 92% completion currently, he hoped that the work would be completed by February 2023.

Mr Owusu-Bio clarified that the project also relocated residents of the Ghana Airport Company and the Meteorological Service to the Jubilee Enclave to make way for the construction of the Jubilee City Project.

“Work is far advanced and we are hopeful that the contractors will meet the deadline,” he asserted.

As part of his working visit, the Deputy Minister took the media on a tour of the old Police Service accommodation facilities at the Airport, 37 DVLA enclave, to show them the difference in outlook and the better facilities the government was providing for the Ghana Police Service.
