A police officer who was attacked by a group of individuals in Axim, in the Western Region of Ghana, has been praised by Peter Lanchene Toobu, a Member of Parliament for Wa West, for pleading for his life.
Mr Toobu explained that the policeman’s decision to plead was smart and prevented him from losing his life during the attack, despite him being in uniform and carrying a gun.
The policeman's professionalism, according to Toobu, gives him power, and without it, he would be powerless.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, the lawmaker said: You know, you have the AK47, you have the uniform, you have the constitution of Ghana behind you, but what you are doing is illegal.
What you're doing, if it's perceived as unlawful, any power that supports you, the power ceases and you become a naked person.
Videos of the attack have circulated on social media, and the Police Professional Standards Bureau is currently investigating the alleged extortion claims.
Despite being hunted by the police, one of the attackers, Kwame Ato Asare Ani, who has been labeled an armed robber by the police, has claimed that he is an informant for the Axim police and collects money from illegal miners on behalf of the police.
