Prof Boateng’s report an obituary of Akufo-Addo’s failed galamsey fight – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) recently criticized a report on the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on illegal mining, calling it "an obituary of President Akufo-Addo's monumentally failed fight against illegal mining." The NDC held a press conference on April 25 and presented various highlights from the report to support their claim that the government's fight against illegal mining was not genuine from the outset.

One example cited was the decision by both the Lands Ministry and the Forestry Commission to grant mining and entry permits into Ghana's forest reserves in 2018 when there was still a ban on all forms of large and small-scale mining activities in the country. The NDC argued that this was evidence that some people in government and the party were using the illegal mining trade for personal gain.

During the press conference, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer of the party, alleged that officials in the government were cited in the report as promoting illegal mining activities in some parts of the country. The report, which is 37 pages long, has brought to the forefront various issues that have plagued the government's fight against illegal mining, leading to the dissolution of the Inter-Ministerial Committee.

The NDC believes that high-profile government and New Patriotic Party officials have colluded to promote illegal mining activities for their own benefit, resulting in a failed fight. The party has called on the Special Prosecutor and Parliament to conduct a full investigation into the report and punish those found guilty.
