The people of Obosomase in the Eastern Region and surrounding towns on Wednesday morning ignored the dangers posed by an overturned fuel tanker and rushed to collect the petroleum product spilling from the tanker.
The accident happened as the tanker was climbing the steep hill at Obosomase. It was carrying diesel and was on its way to Mamfe.
The driver said he missed a gear and couldn't control the vehicle when he stopped almost at the top of the hill and turned around.
The DAF tanker with registration number GW 1077 W was almost at the top of the hill when people saw it slow down, stop and start to reverse.
The driver said the brakes didn't work when he tried to stop.
He saw that the tanker was in danger and that there were other cars behind it, so he pulled onto the verge. As he did so, the container fell to the ground and one of the top covers opened, spilling the product.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the scene.
