Sad News Hits Azumah Nelson

News is coming in that Azumah Nelson, a famous boxer, has lost his mother. Madam Comfort Atwei Quarcoo, his mother, died on January 2, 2023. She was 86 years old.

In a statement he released on January 3, Mr. Nelson confirmed that his late mother died at home after a long battle with an illness that he didn't say what it was.

"I was with her three days ago, and I could tell she was in pain," he said. "But she's at peace now," he added.

"She has done a great job raising her children and seeing her grandchildren. She deserves a break," he said, adding, "This is a celebration of life."

"The Bible says that we should thank God for everything, so we thank God for this one, too," said the boxing legend, who is a Christian.

He was known as Professor Zoom Zoom Nelson, and many people called him Africa's greatest boxing champion of all time. He asked for prayers for his family and said that information about his funeral will be made public soon.

ANelson has won three world boxing titles and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004. He is also known as Africa's best boxer and the WBC's best superfeatherweight boxer of all time. In August 2022, he was also added to the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.

Nelson's first fight as a professional boxer was in 1979. It didn't get much attention, except in Ghana, where he was known because his family was from there. Nelson wasn't well-known enough around the world for this event to be given the attention it deserved.

All of that changed over time, though, because he became a world-famous boxer. In his first fight as a pro, he beat Billy Kwame in Accra by a decision in eight rounds.

On March 3, 1980, in his third fight, he knocked out Henry Sadler in the ninth round to win the 126-pound regional title for Ghana. On December 13, that same year, he knocked out Joe Skipper in round 10 to win the belt for the whole continent of Africa.

Nelson beat Bozzou Aziza in Togo in 1981. It was Nelson's first fight outside of the United States. Then, in his first fight in the United States, he beat Miguel Ruiz in California. He won the Commonwealth of Nations Featherweight title when he knocked out Brian Roberts in the fifth round.

Even though he was successful early on and had never lost in 13 fights, Nelson was almost unknown outside of Ghana. Because of this, he was a big underdog when, on short notice, he challenged WBC featherweight champion Salvador Sánchez on July 21, 1982, at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Nelson's stock as a boxer went up after that fight, even though he lost by technical knockout in round 15. Many fans saw him as a worthy leading contender after that fight.

Nelson was also at a big disadvantage because his custom mouthpiece was stolen and he had to use a cheap one he bought at a store and had to cut to fit his mouth with a knife. This made him hurt all through the fight.

The fight between Sánchez and Nelson would be Salvador Sánchez's last. He died almost two months later in Mexico City in a car accident. In his next fight, Nelson beat Irving Mitchell in eight rounds by knocking him out.
