Shocking Crime: Pragya Torched, Rider Beaten to Death in Cape Coast Shoe Theft

In a regrettable incident at the Mfantsipim Round-about School gate, a Pragya tricycle, commonly used for transportation, was deliberately set on fire, resulting in its complete destruction. Furthermore, the rider of the Pragya met a tragic fate as he was beaten to death due to suspicions of his involvement in a theft that occurred using the vehicle. The distressing event took place during the early hours of Monday.

According to Emmanuel Sam, the Secretary of the Pragya Riders Association in the Cape Coast Metropolis, the deceased, accompanied by two companions, allegedly employed the Pragya to steal fully loaded sacks of second-hand shoes from Esikafo Ambatem, located near the Mfantsipim School gate. Unfortunately, their luck ran out as enraged residents pursued them, leading to the arrest and subsequent beating of the deceased by some furious individuals from the area.

Expressing concern about this incident, Secretary Emmanuel Sam appealed to the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly to establish an identification number system for all registered Pragya vehicles within the metropolis. He believes that implementing such a system would aid in identifying unregistered vehicles and removing disobedient riders from the roads, contributing to enhanced accountability and safety.

Providing additional insight into the frequent thefts that have been plaguing the area, Evans Owusu, the leader of the second-hand shoe dealers, disclosed that numerous sacks of shoes have been stolen on a weekly basis. Each sack is estimated to be worth GHC 2,500, and in some instances, the thieves manage to make off with four or five sacks in a single week. The persistent thefts have created tension within the group, as suspicions arise regarding the potential involvement of their own workers.

Mr. Owusu recounted that during the most recent theft attempt, they were caught red-handed when one of their members raised an alarm. Consequently, they were pursued and apprehended by outraged residents. The following morning, they discovered that their Pragya, which had been used in their alleged criminal activities, had been intentionally set on fire, while one of the riders had suffered severe physical assault.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the need for effective measures to address rising thefts and ensure the safety of both the community and riders. The incident highlights the urgency for implementing an identification number system for registered Pragya vehicles in the Cape Coast Metropolis. By doing so, authorities can identify unregistered vehicles and take appropriate actions against disobedient riders, promoting a safer environment for all road users. In the wake of this tragedy, it is hoped that steps will be taken to prevent further occurrences and foster a sense of security within the community.
