Soldiers Arrest 72 Ashaiman Youth Over Colleague’s Murder

A total of 72 youths from Ashaiman, where a soldier was killed over the weekend, have been arrested by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Senior officers led the soldiers after a soldier was killed.

The suspects were taken to Michel Camp outside Tema for investigation by the military police.

Armored personnel carriers (APCs), pick-up trucks, buses and helicopters were used by the military to storm the area and monitor the situation.

They moved from Keta House, which is near the official town, to Taifa.

Another team also invaded Old and New Tulaku, arresting suspects to aid the investigation.

During the invasion, citizens were allegedly lined up in the streets and brutalised by the troops.

According to information received, the officers were sent from Michel Camp, the camp of the First Battalion Infantry of the Ghana Army.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey, the military personnel who allegedly brutalised several civilians in Ashaiman on 6 March came from Michel Camp, which is part of the First Battalion of Infantry of the Ghana Army, based in Tema.

On Tuesday 7 March, Mr Norgbey stated, "I know the soldiers (military troops) are from Michel Camp. The boss there is not available even though I have called his number.

"I know the soldiers are leaving the Michel camp. The leader there cannot be reached when I call his number.”

"Whoever committed the crime" (killing the soldier) "will face the full force of the law", he continued.

According to a witness, "a soldier was killed nearby and the soldiers are now going from house to house, allegedly beating people. When they finally get to you, they tell you to go inside. We have a kind of curfew.”
