Surrender to police – Chairman Wontumi tells Prof Boateng

In a recent statement, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has urged former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, to surrender to the police for not utilizing his position to benefit Ghana according to a report by Adom Online.

Mr. Boasiako believes that as the former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Prof. Frimpong-Boateng should have exposed the government officials involved in illegal mining and small-scale mining while he was in power, as a sign of his honesty and commitment.

However, Chairman Wontumi, as he is known, has questioned the professor's motives and timing, suggesting that he could have used his powers to benefit the government and Ghana while in office. Chairman Wontumi further emphasized that if Prof. Frimpong-Boateng has accepted his failure to perform his duties, then he should be the first to report himself to the police.

According to a 36-page report by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, addressed to President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Chief of Staff, some high-profile members of the NPP impeded his efforts to combat illegal mining due to their involvement in the act. The report has drawn scrutiny from some politicians named in it, who have discredited the allegations and challenged the professor to provide evidence.

Overall, the situation is complex, and it remains to be seen how it will unfold. However, it is essential to prioritize transparency, accountability, and justice to ensure that the interests of Ghana and its citizens are protected.
