A student nurse worked in a maternity unit at a hospital in Britain. On Friday, January 27, he went to court to face charges that he planned to attack an air force base and brought a bomb he made himself to the unit where he worked.
Mohammad Farooq, who is 27 years old, was arrested on January 20 outside of St. James's University Hospital in Leeds, England. Prosecutors say he had a "viable" pressure-cooker bomb with 13.7 kilograms (30 pounds) of homemade low-explosive material.
Prosecutors say that earlier this month, Farooq did "hostile reconnaissance" of a Royal Air Force base in England after being told online to attack it.
One of the charges against him is that he planned a terrorist act related to the air base plan, which prosecutors say was driven by Islamic extremism.

Farooq is also charged with having an explosive substance and a fake gun because of what happened at the hospital. Prosecutors say he did this because he had a grudge against another employee.
Farooq went to the Westminster Magistrates' Court by video link on Friday, January 27. He did not have to say anything because he was not asked to. He was told to stay in jail until his next hearing at London's Central Criminal Court on February 3.
