WHAT CAN I DO? After Losing My Husband Months Ago, New Fiancé Wants Our Children to Carry His Name

One year ago, I experienced a loss that left me feeling empty and broken. My husband of many years passed away, leaving me a widow with two children to raise on my own. I was determined to keep going and not give up, but the grief was overwhelming at times.

Over the past year, I have slowly come to terms with my loss and moved on with my life. I recently found a new love, and we are planning to get married. It is an exciting time, but it also brings up some difficult questions about my children and their future.

My new husband wants us to take his last name when we marry. He believes that our children should share his name and take on his identity. While I understand his reasoning and respect his wishes, I feel strongly that my children should keep the same last name as their late father.

I am immensely proud of my children and the family we have built, and I have worked hard to ensure that they recognize and remember their father and his legacy. It would be difficult for me to support a name change for them, and I worry that it would be confusing and upsetting for them.

I want to honor my new husband and his wishes, but I also want to ensure that the memory of my late husband is preserved. I know that this is a difficult decision that needs to be made with care. How can I reconcile the two?

I have decided to speak to my children and get their opinion. I am confident that, with their input, I can make a decision that honors everyone. I also plan to consult with a marriage counselor or therapist who can provide guidance and support.

No matter what I decide, I know that it will be a difficult transition. I am grateful that I have found new love and have my family to support me during this time. I am determined to make the right decision for us all, and I hope that together, we can celebrate the present and the future, while honoring and remembering the past.
