The Sayreville councilwoman was thirty years old. Police said a preliminary investigation indicates she was the intended victim of the shooting. However, the reason for the shooting is still unknown and under investigation. No arrests had been made as of Thursday morning.

The death of Eunice Dwumfour has stunned and devastated the town, Democratic Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said in a statement. "Eunice was a determined councillor for our community who genuinely wanted to help all of our residents. This situation is all the more heartbreaking because she was taken from us by a heinous crime.

The mayor described Dwumfour as a devout Christian who made a concerted effort to incorporate her strong Christian beliefs into both her personal and professional life.

Kilpatrick said: "We are confident that our police, working with the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, will bring this fast-moving investigation to a swift and successful conclusion. We look forward to the identification, arrest and successful prosecution of those responsible.

Karen Bailey Bebert, the chairwoman of the Sayreville Republican Party, said in a statement, "We remember Eunice for how she lived, not how she died. She embodied Sayreville, pursuing the American Dream and triumphing over obstacles with grit and a smile, always giving love and time to others. She embodied Sayreville and will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.
